The launch of GTA 5 Enhanced on PC has sparked considerable backlash among players due to the removal of the in-game text chat feature.

The enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto 5 has officially launched on PC, bringing several improvements that were previously exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. GTA 5 Enhanced Brings Improvements but Lacks Key Features

Released on March 4, GTA 5 Enhanced for PC introduces a host of optimizations, including improved graphics, enhanced audio, and exclusive platform-specific features like Nvidia DLSS support for GeForce RTX graphics cards and advanced ray tracing options. Players can migrate their story mode and GTA Online progress from the legacy version, which is now renamed GTA 5 Legacy in Steam libraries.

Despite these enhancements, many players feel that the removal of the in-game text chat feature negatively impacts the multiplayer experience. While some initially assumed this was a glitch, Rockstar Games reportedly confirmed via a support ticket that text chat would not be supported at launch. Instead, players are encouraged to use Steam chat or the in-game SMS feature for communication.

Community Backlash and Negative Steam Reviews

The removal of text chat has led to significant backlash from the GTA Online community. Many players took to Steam reviews to voice their dissatisfaction, citing not only the lack of text chat but also performance issues and complications with migrating their data from the legacy version. On launch day, GTA 5 Enhanced received over 1,600 negative reviews, contributing to its current "Mixed" rating on Steam—similar to the reception of Monster Hunter Wilds on its PC launch.

Will Rockstar Bring Back In-Game Text Chat?

It remains uncertain whether Rockstar Games will reinstate the text chat feature in a future update. However, the company provides a feedback submission page on the official GTA Online website, allowing players to voice their concerns and suggestions. While the omission of text chat is a significant issue for many, the game still maintains a relatively even split between positive and negative reviews, indicating that some players are enjoying the enhancements despite the controversy.

With Grand Theft Auto 6 set to release in fall 2025, now might be a pivotal time for players to revisit GTA 5. However, whether Rockstar addresses these concerns in upcoming patches remains to be seen.
